Science catches up with lived reality
A systematic review (which is an analysis of all relevant research articles when it’s at home) across the Scandinavian chiropractic profession reported the following: Patients using chiropractic in a maintenance/preventive way reported fewer days with low back pain compared to those who only sought chiropractic care “when needed”.
Conclusive comments on the main study quoted:
“Knowledge of chiropractic Maintenance Care has advanced. There is reasonable consensus among chiropractors on what Maintenance Care is, how it should be used, and its indications. Presently, Maintenance Care can be considered an evidence-based method to perform secondary or tertiary prevention (that means keeping you pain free, well and moving) in patients who have suffered previous low back pain and who have responded well to the initial treatments used to help resolve the pain.”
What does this mean for you?
Between Annika and Graham at Spectrum Chiropractic we have 55 years of experience in practice. The results of this study are no surprise to us. We witness that when patients visit regularly to keep things in shape they fare better in many ways. How often would work best for you depends on your individual circumstances. For some, it is 4 times a year, and for some, it’s once a month. We usually find the ideal time span by extending the time between visits to the point where we find all those things that will hurt if left much longer while you are still pain free.
Keep in mind that pain is the last and most insistent way your body communicates distress to you. It usually starts with stiffness, less range of motion, altered gait, tightness or tension, disturbed sleep, more fatigue, poorer mood etc. We are more than happy to listen to your ideas on how Maintenance Care may work best for you.
